MAP - Mercator
MAP - Mercator is a renewed experience museum that immerses visitors in the world of maps and cartography, combining historical highlights with interactive and immersive installations. As the only cartography museum in Belgium, it shows how maps have shaped our view of the world and still play an important role today. The new permanent display consists of four thematic zones that together answer the question: what is a map? Highlights include the original Mercator globes, the Largest Atlas in the World, a 4D balloon flight and an interactive projection experience.
MAP - Den Brei
MAP - Den Brei immerses you in the story of the knitting industry in Sint-Niklaas and the surrounding region. In this authentic industrial setting, historical knitting machines come back to life: you can hear their rhythm, smell the machine oil and see how craftsmanship once set the pace. Discover everything about knitting techniques, fashion history and the working conditions of the many people employed in the industry.
MAP - Curiosum
In the historic ‘Huis Janssens’, discover a unique museum of curiosities that collects memories and brings them back to life. MAP - Curiosum tells the stories of the house's former residents, of the city and the Waasland region, and of generations of collectors who left their mark over the years. From old musical instruments to modern art, from books to ostrich eggs: every room reveals a new treasure. Thanks to a design that respects and enhances the character of the house, combined with clear storytelling and thoughtful multimedia, you'll enjoy a rich, immersive experience in a monument that carries its history into the 21st century.
MAP - Paviljoen
The former museum building in the Mercator Park has been given a new lease of life as MAP - Paviljoen. This museum pavilion hosts temporary exhibitions, inspiring talks and creative workshops.
When exhibitions are running, we follow Curiosum's opening hours.

School visits to MAP
A museum visit is truly enjoyable when you get to discover, try or make something together. That's why MAP offers a varied range of teaching packages, workshops and guided tours for nursery, primary and secondary education, spread across our three museums: MAP - Mercator, MAP - Den Brei and MAP - Curiosum. From being a painter for a day, to searching through the Curiosity Cabinet, to the wonderful world of the knitting industry in From Needle to Thread: every class will find an engaging, tailor-made programme here.
Our educational activities encourage pupils to think, wonder and experience how heritage, science and creativity reinforce one another.
Together, we turn every museum visit into a rich learning experience that stays with pupils long afterwards.
